Bourbon and Hard Cider Cocktail

by TastefullyJulie on October 1, 2012

A couple nights ago my favorite restaurant was running a drink special called “the Punk Rocker”.

I had to try it for the name alone, even though the ingredients weren’t exactly what usually attracts me to a cocktail. Hard cider (yum), bourbon (yes, please!), ginger liqueur (no problem), and cinnamon.

Cinnamon is touch-and-go. Sure, I love it in pies and desserts. A dash of cinnamon lends a certain depth of flavor to Indian and Moroccan dishes. But in drinks, cinnamon makes me nervous. One bad experience with Goldschlager will do that to a person. {shudder}

But I’m glad the name drew me in to this drink, because I really enjoyed it! My husband’s not particularly fond of cinnamon or hard cider, and yet he kept stealing sips of my drink. He described it as “autumn in a glass” which is spot on.

I recreated my own version at home that is lacking in ginger liqueur (because who has ginger liqueur lying around?) but it’s hardly missed. If you don’t have any cinnamon sticks you can try using a plain simple syrup (1 part sugar, 1 part water) and a pinch of dried cinnamon.

Fall in a glass indeed. I checked out that restaurant’s menu and it does look pretty tempting. Gnocchi with butternut squash, hazelnut, and sage brown butter? I’m in. In fact, add that to my list of things to make this fall.

The best part is the menu changes at least weekly. (Or the worst part when you find something you really love!)

OMG this takes me back to my early college days…but MUCH more sophisticated haha. We used to take apple juice and goldschlager as a shot and then spray whip cream in our mouths and call it an apple pie shot…haha…ohhh those days.

Looks like a terrific drink! And I happen to have some cinnamon simple syrup in the refrigerator (really!). Don’t have hard cider, but that’s easy to come by. And there’s always bourbon in the house. Never knew there was a ginger liqueur before - I’ll have to look into that. Really nice - thanks.

i am unreasonably excited about the idea of cinnamon simple syrup. and also this entire drink; and i don’t even drink bourbon. looks like that’s going to change, because i’m totally trying this.
